Santa Canela
Highland Park, Los Angeles, completed 2025Scope of work: Full build-out
Santa Canela is a 720-square-foot bakery and coffee concept located in a historic bank building along one of the busiest streets in Highland Park.
The design draws inspiration from traditional Mexican bakeries, blending vibrant colors and textures influenced by cinnamon—the key ingredient in this concept. From the deep colored MDF panels of the center island and the to the warm brown and bronze hues,, every detail of the space reflects the rich, aromatic essence of this spice. Additionally, the brick facade of the exterior is thoughtfully carried into the interior design, creating a seamless flow between the two spaces and enhancing the connection between the building’s history and the modern, inviting atmosphere inside.
Given the small footprint of the space, minimal clearances were essential, making the layout both compact and efficient. The open kitchen is a focal point of the design, integrating into the front-of-house experience. This not only allows guests to engage with the cooking process but also creates a lively, interactive atmosphere where the preparation of each product becomes part of the sensory experience.
The millwork throughout the space is crafted from stained white oak, adding warmth and texture, while the colored elements are created through MDF, offering a modern contrast that complements the overall aesthetic. The only more costly element of the design is the Calacatta Viola marble countertop, which stands in contrast to the otherwise monochromatic, solid-colored materials used throughout the space. Its rich veining and color introduce an element of refinement, providing a focal point in the design.
